Setting:

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony takes place in the present day.  The majority of the plot takes place in the Chateau Paradizo, Southern France.  Another important setting is The Island of Hybras, Limbo.  Lost in time, Hybras is where all of the demons live. The Bellini Theatre, Catania, Southern Sicily is not mentioned much in the book, but it is important, as it's where the antagonists kidnap a demon.  There are more settings, but the last important one relevant to the story is Haven.  Haven is a secret fairy world in The Lower Elements.  The fairies, and their setting in The Lower Elements, are an important component in each novel in the Artemis Fowl' Series, as they bring a futuristic element to the Series.

Characters:

Artemis Fowl, Jr. - Artemis is the main character in the novel.  He is a 14-year-old childhood genius and also a criminal mastermind behind most of the significant events involving the fairy people. He has yet to find another human to outwit him mentally,  but he has little physical strength and, therefore, lets his bodyguard, Butler, guard and protect him .  He is complex and brilliant  for his young age, and, beginning mainly in this novel of the Artemis' Series, begins to use his clever skills for good instead of mischief.  There is no estimating what he will achieve next.

Captain Holly Short - Holly is a fairy who lives in a secret underground world of fairies.  The city is known as Haven, The Lower Elements.  She is no longer a Captain for the Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance Squad (LEPrecon).  She quit the force due to a new commander, Ark Sool, who accused her of murdering her previous commander, Captain Julius Root.  Soon after, she and Mulch Diggums became private investigators, where she was given an opportunity to work with Section Eight.  Section Eight is the most advanced underground police unit, as they are fully funded by a billionaire.  The job of Section Eight is to prevent any demon activity.  Holly Short has been promoted to Captain, as her job is to retrieve demons who teleport into the Mud Men dimension.

No1 - No1 is a demon warlock imp that lives on the Island of Hybras, Limbo in a lost dimension.  He was bullied by the other demons, because they didn't believe that he was a warlock.  He hasn't transformed into a full grown demon yet which should have happened years ago.  The demon leader, Abbot,  tells No1 that it's impossible for him to be a warlock, since all of the warlocks have been lost in time.  No1 can no longer take the bullying from the others and jumps into the magical volcano, transporting him into a different dimension.  This leap takes him to Earth's dimension, where he is shot so that he can't teleport back.  He is the reason why there is conflict in the book.

Minerva Paradizo - Minerva has similar characteristics to Artemis Fowl.  She, also, is a child being just 12-years-old and, just like Artemis, is considered to be very intelligent and quick-witted.  Her father is a billionaire, and, like Artemis, she also has security guards and lives in a mansion.  Unlike Artemis' effort to conceal the fairies from being exposed, however, Minerva wants to capture and donate the demon imp, No1, to science.  She has a father with enough money to make this happen, and a little brother that would assist in this devilish plan.  Little did she know, exposing the kidnapped demon would cause multiple catastrophical wars.

Billy Kong - Billy Kong is a made-up  name that relieved him from the punishments of his criminal activities from a gang that he was a member of.  He is now working with the Paradizos as a security guard.  He is working with Minerva, so that he can get close to the kidnapped demon, No1.  When Billy was a young lad, his older brother told him that he would go out at night to fight "the demons", when, in reality, his brother would run with a gang.  His brother was murdered by a gang member, but the unwitted Kong thought the demons killed him.  From that day on, Kong's goal was to kill all of the demons, and this is what led him to take the drastic measures that he does in the book.
